Mr Paul Rodney Marc Hobson (21), a machine operator, of Deer Park, Portadown, was returned for trial in custody to Belfast Crown Court yesterday on a murder charge.

Mr Hobson denies murdering a Portadown Catholic, Mr Robert Hamill, in the town centre during a confrontation between Protestant and Catholic groups on April 27th last year.

Evidence was given by a police witness that the Protestant group, numbering 40 to 50, arrived at the town centre from Bridge Street, and the Catholic crowd arrived from St Patrick's Hall Social Club in Thomas Street.

Fighting broke out, and it is alleged Mr Hobson was among the crowd, and that Mr Hamill, when on the ground, was attacked and kicked.
