A Louth man was jailed for five years yesterday after Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was told he seriously assaulting a casual drinking companion to try to force him to reveal his bank PIN number.

Norman Rowan (25), unemployed, of Tower View, Tenure, Monasterboice, and an associate met the victim in Eamonn Doran's pub in Temple Bar in Dublin on July 25th, 1996. After some drinks they agreed to go to a disco.

Rowan tried to look over his victim's shoulder at a bank cash machine to see his PIN number but failed to learn it. When they walked on, Rowan land his companion dragged the 20-year-old victim down a Temple Bar laneway, pulled off his glasses and kicked him in the head, demanding his PIN number.

Mr Sean Feehan, defending, said his client was already serving 3 1/2 years imposed by Dundalk Circuit Court for 27 other offences. The sentences were due for review in October 1998.
