A 40-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the shooting yesterday afternoon of a senior loyalist in Belfast.

Police last night confirmed the identity of the dead man as 43-year-old Robber (Bobby) Moffett.

Mr Moffett, who was understood to be a member of the Red Hand Commando (RHC) terror group, was shot on Belfast’s Shankill Road in front of dozens of people.

He was hit in the head a number of times at the junction of Shankill Road and Conway Street. Police said the murder was "ruthless and cold-blooded".

The man was arrested last night and is being held at the PSNI's serious crime suite in Antrim.

The murder was witnessed by a large number of people, including a number of children, who were on the street during a busy lunchtime. The gunmen were last seen running in the direction of Conway Street. One witness said he thought there may have been a getaway car.

The man was given emergency medical treatment on the road where he fell before being taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries a short time later.
