Man arrested over Bantry death

Gardaí are treating as suspicious the discovery of a man's body in Bantry in west Cork this evening.

The body of the 53-year-old man was found with injuries at an embankment at Seskin, about 2km from the centre of the town, at about 6pm.

Gardaí were alerted and immediately cordoned off the scene and officers have requested the services of the State Pathologist's Office.

Gardaí later arrested a man in his 50s a short distance away on suspicion of having committed an assault and he has been taken to Bantry Garda station.

The man in his 70s is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, under which he can be held for up to 24 hours.
