Gardaí searching for a passenger after a car fell off a ferry in Cork arrested a man in his 30s this morning in relation to the incident.

The car, containing two men, rolled off the ferry as it was approaching Carrigaloe near Cobh shortly before 7pm last night.

One of the men was rescued from the water and taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment last night. He was badly shaken by the incident but suffered no physical injuries. Gardaí arrested him this morning and he can be held for up to 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the search for the second man is continuing with gardaí, naval divers and the emergency services including Crosshaven Lifeboat involved.

The incident occurred as the Cross River Ferry service from Glenbrook in Passage West was approaching Cobh Ferry Terminal.

The Passage West to Cobh Ferry service has been in operation since March 1993. The crossing from Glenbrook to Carrigaloe takes in the region of four minutes.

Cross River Ferries issued a short statement expressing their sympathies over the accident. Management also said they were satisfied all safety procedures and regulations were adhered to.
