The defendant was remanded on his own £100 bail by Mr Justice Morris to appear again at the Central Criminal Court for sentence on May 13th. Evidence of the offences will be given on that date.

Mr Justice Morris requested the preparation of both probation and psychiatric reports on the defendant and impact reports on the two victims.

Following an application by Mr Maurice Gaffney SC, prosecuting, the defendant undertook to continue living at a west of Ireland hostel and to sign on twice weekly at a local Garda station.

Mr Martin Giblin SC (with Ms Mary Ellen Ring), defending, said his client appeared to be suffering from a mental handicap and seemed to have a mental age below that of an adult.

He had been reared in institutions and had worked as an assistant to a builder. He was now unemployed and was living in the hostel, which was run by a religious order.
