A Dublin man in his fifties was killed in Co Cavan last night when the van he was driving was in collision with a pick-up truck.

He has been named as Brian Connelly (56) from the Old Bawn area of Tallaght.

The crash occurred at Lisgrey, Virginia at about 5pm. The driver of the truck was also taken to hospital but his injuries are not life-threatening.

A total of 16 people have died on the State's roads so far this year. In 2005, 399 people died on the roads, the highest toll since 2001.
