Man (39) charged with Clare murder

A CLARE man has been charged with the murder of Ballyvaughan woman Deirdre McCarthy (43).

A CLARE man has been charged with the murder of Ballyvaughan woman Deirdre McCarthy (43).

At a special sitting yesterday of Ennis District Court, Colm Deeley (39), a father of two, School Road, Ballyvaughan, was charged with the murder of Ms McCarthy in Co Clare on March 28th last. The court was told that when he was charged, he said he was “very sorry” for what had happened.

Ms McCarthy’s body was found on Fanore beach on March 31st following a three-day search.

She was last seen alive on Sunday, March 27th, and was reported missing the following day.

Her funeral took place on Tuesday in Ballyvaughan.

At the special sitting yesterday, Det Garda Thomas Molloy of Ennistymon Garda station gave evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of Mr Deeley at Ennis Garda station at 8.14pm on Wednesday.

Det Garda Molloy said that Mr Deeley had said after caution: “I’m very sorry for what happened”.

Making an application for legal aid, solicitor for Mr Deeley, Gearóid Geraghty said his client is a part-time Fás worker employed three days a week.

Judge Joseph Mangan granted legal aid.

Judge Mangan remanded Mr Deeley in custody to reappear before Ennistymon District Court sitting in Kilrush next Wednesday.
