The body of a 19-year-old man was recovered from the Liffey overnight just hours after the Skyfestfireworks display delighted thousands of spectators gathered along the river to watch the event.

It is understood he was one of two people who got into the river at Lower Ormond Quay shortly after 10 p.m. and then attempted to swim to the other side. The alarm was raised when only one of them made it.

Garda drivers who were on duty during the St Patrick’s festival Skyfest event were joined by the Garda helicopter and Dublin fire brigade in the search.

The man's body was recovered at about midnight but the his name has not been released.
