A man murdered outside his home had been the victim of a so-called "punishment" shooting two years ago, it emerged today.
Mr Bobby McGuigan (36) was alone in his parked car in Lurgan in Co Armagh when he was hit a number of times last night.
The RUC is still trying to establish a motive for the killing, in which two masked men were involved, although it is not believed to be sectarian. Mr McGuigan was a Catholic.
He was in the driver's seat of his Toyota car, parked outside a block of flats at Liscorrin Court, Ulster Street, close to where he lived.
The dead man had a criminal record and in January 1999 was wounded in a "punishment" shooting. He appeared in court a few weeks ago charged with assaulting his sister-in-law.
An RUC spokeswoman said: "We are investigating the circumstances of this murder but we cannot speculate on a motive."
Northern Ireland First Minster Mr David Trimble - theMP for the area - condemned the murder.
Meanwhile, in Belfast, the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force was accused of bombing the offices of the taxi firm of a former member of its political wing.
Former Progressive Unionist Party member Mr Jackie Mahood claimed the UVF was behind a pipe-bomb attack on his firm on the Crumlin Road.
The blast caused minor damage to two ground floor offices. Two staff working in an upstairs room heard the blast but escaped uninjured.
In Derry police believe a gun attack on a house and the petrol-bombing of a car in the city's Waterside area were linked.
A mother and son were in the house at Kinsale Park when a shot was fired through a bathroom window. They escaped unhurt.
Later a car was set alight by a petrol bomb at Milltown View.
