Loyalist paramilitaries were tonight being blamed for a murder attempt on a County Down man yesterday.

The man remains in hospital after being shot several times on his doorstep a bungalow in Clover Brae, Donaghcloney, last night.

A PSNI spokesperson said a woman answered the door and was asked to get her partner and when he answered, he was shot in the stomach. He managed to get to a neighbour's house and call for help.

The injured man, who is in his 30s, underwent several hours of surgery at Craigavon Area Hospital and is now said to be in a stable condition.

Police believe loyalist paramilitaries were responsible and are treating the shooting as attempted murder.
