London - Britain's main road haulage associations will meet the Transport Minister, Mr John Reid, later today in an attempt to resolve lorry-drivers' grievances after a largely unsuccessful protest against excise duties and fuel taxes disrupted traffic here yesterday, Rachel Donnelly reports.

Hundreds of lorry-drivers converged on the city and parked their vehicles in Park Lane. The main haulage associations opposed any unlawful action and agreed to meet Mr Reid after the protest failed to make any headway. The duty on petrol has risen to 6 per cent above inflation and the lorry-drivers also point out that road tax on a five-axle lorry is now £5,750, compared with £38 in Luxembourg.
