A lorry driver and a woman motorist whose vehicles collided on a busy dual carriageway were both convicted yesterday of driving offences. Liam Doogue (40), Roseberry Court, Newbridge, Co Kildare, was fined £40 for careless driving and failing to yield.

Jennifer Melia (21), Airlie Heights, Lucan, Co Dublin, was fined £50 for dangerous driving because the rear brakes of her car were found to be seriously defective. Dublin District Court heard Ms Melia's young son, Chester, was paralysed below the knees as a result of the crash.
