A Liverpool fan was stabbed in the centre of Rome on Wednesday night and two others were slightly injured ahead of the team's clash against AS Roma in the UEFA Cup.

Gerard Collins (27) was stabbed in the arm and stomach during a fight. In a separate incident two other Liverpool fans received slight injuries after scuffles with Roma supporters in a central square.

Collins was treated for his wounds and is expected to recover in two weeks. The others are expected to recover sooner, medical officials told news agency ANSA.

There were no reports of any arrests.

More than 1,000 Liverpool fans arrived in Rome on Wednesday ahead of tonight's game. Around 4,000 are expected to be at the Olympic Stadium for the fourth round tie.
