The AC Milan striker announced yesterday that he is in talks with the Merseyside club over a free move during the winter transfer window.

However, speaking to the Liverpool Echo, a Liverpool source today described the speculations as 'rubbish'.

But the speculation on Merseyside is unlikely to abate despite this firm rebuttal from the club.

The 31-year-old has previously stated he wants to stay in Europe and would like a move to the Premiership if possible.

Speaking yesterday he said: "It's true that I had conversations with Liverpool, but the negotiations haven't finished yet, so I can't add anything else."
