The number of people on the Live Register fell from 157,800 in February to 157,500 in March, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The CSO said the standardised unemployment rate in March was 4.2 per cent - the same rate as that found by the latest Quarterly National Household Survey.

In the year to March 2007, the CSO said there was an unadjusted increase of 326 or 0.2 per cent. This compares with an unadjusted decrease of 218 or 0.1 per cent in the year to February 2007.

The figures showed the monthly decrease consisted of an increase of 600 males and a decrease of 900 females.

In March, the estimated number of casual and part-time workers on the Live Register was 8,111 males and 12,763 females, the CSO said.
