In the year to June 2001, the Live Register decreased in all regions despite a monthly rise of 7,174 persons, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office today.

The monthly increases ranged from 3.8 per cent in the South-East to 7.5 per cent in the West.

However, in the year to June 2001 the Live Register decreased overall in all regions, resulting in an annual decrease of 10.1 per cent nationally.

The largest regional falls were in Dublin (-18.2 per cent) and in the Midlands-East (-14.7 per cent).

Other features include:

  • For males the largest monthly increases were in the South-West (4.4 per cent) and the West (3.9 per cent).
  • For females the largest monthly increases were in the West (12.8 per cent), Dublin (11.8 per cent), the Mid-East (11.7 per cent) and the Mid-West (11.3 per cent).
  • Against the monthly increase the Register decreased slightly in 18 of the 124 local offices of registration.

The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment. It includes part-time workers (those who work up to three days a week), seasonal and casual workers entitled to Unemployment Assistance or Benefit.

Unemployment is measured by the Quarterly National Household Survey and the latest figure, for December to February 2001, is 65,600 persons unemployed.
