A reception was held in Dun Laoghaire last night to honour Dr John de Courcy Ireland who recently became the first Irish man to be awarded the Caird Medal by the National Maritime Museum in England.

The medal is given to an individual who has done "conspicuous important work" in an area of the museum's interest. Dr de Courcy Ireland has been involved with maritime matters for 40 years, including the running of the Dun Laoghaire life boat, and founded the Irish National Maritime Museum.
