Legendary boxing trainer Eddie Futch, who inspired 20 world champions in a long career, died on Wednesday aged 90.

Legendary boxing trainer Eddie Futch, who inspired 20 world champions in a long career, died on Wednesday aged 90.

Futch worked with a veritable who's who of boxing, including Bob Foster, Ken Norton, Alexis Arguello, Larry Holmes and Riddick Bowe.

But it was his partnership with heavyweight Joe Frazier that brought him his greatest success, handing Muhammad Ali his first professional defeat in a classic Madison Square Garden encounter in 1971.

Futch retired in 1998 at the age of 87 and was inducted into the boxing hall of fame in 1994.
