Tehran - Iran's first-ever municipal elections drew a large turnout across the capital yesterday, particularly among young people, leaving supporters of the reformist President, Mr Mohammed Khatami, well placed in their key battle with hardline opponents.

Already substantial in the morning, the turnout grew even heavier in the afternoon at voting stations, prompting the authorities to extend polling by several hours in Tehran and other major cities.
