Landslides have killed at least 36 people and destroyed hundreds of homes in Ecuador.

The landslides came after four days of heavy rains, the Red Cross said.

About 36 people died and four were missing in four landslides near Papallacta, a town about 32 miles east of Ecuador's capital, Quito. Seven others were missing in other provinces hit by the rains, the Red Cross said.

About 400 homes were destroyed and 700 people affected by the storms nationwide.

Ecuador's Amazon region has experienced heavy rains since last Friday, producing strong river currents that carried off some homes.

Several Amazon provinces have asked Ecuador’s government to declare a state of emergency in the region to channel aid more quickly.
