The Belfast artist Nicola Russell yesterday presented President Clinton with a painting of the Fermanagh lakelands - home to his Irish ancestors, the Cassidys.

Ms Russell made the presentation when the President visited the Odyssey Arena in Belfast. The landscape, which shows Lough Erne and Devenish Island, took 10 weeks to complete. It was privately commissioned.

Four years ago, Ms Russell painted President Clinton's portrait. She had never met him and the oil painting was based on photographs. It was unveiled by Senator George Mitchell in Belfast.

Before the presentation Ms Russell said she was keen to tell the President that Fermanagh is "one of the most beautiful counties in Ireland. I want him to give the painting to his daughter Chelsea and I hope that in a few years' time Chelsea will be back in Ireland with her mother as US President."
