Kohl in German election duel

Bonn - The German parliament has opened a budget debate that will today feature the only direct election campaign duel expected between the Chancellor, Dr Helmut Kohl, and his leftist challenger, Mr Gerhard Schroder. The two rivals to head Germany's next government have so far not come face to face in the campaign. The general election is on September 27th.
