Berlin - Germany's former chancellor, Dr Helmut Kohl, has transferred more than £3.3 million to his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to help to pay fines the party faces on account of his acceptance of illegal donations, writes Denis Staunton.

Dr Kohl is under criminal investigation following his admission that he accepted more than £1 million in illegal donations for his party during the 1990s.
