King Hussein of Jordan, who completed chemotherapy on Saturday, will undergo bone marrow transplants tomorrow and Wednesday in an effort to achieve a more successful remission of cancer, his doctor has said.

According to the doctor, Lieut Gen Dr Samir Farraj, King Hussein (63) was in stable condition after completing chemotherapy at the Mayo Clinic in the US.

The king was forced back into cancer treatment at the clinic earlier in the week after suffering a relapse of the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that he fought last year.

Jordan's ambassador to the US, Mr Marwan Muasher, said that King Hussein was in "much better shape" than he was several days ago and was keeping his spirits up before the next round of treatment.

He added that King Hussein was in close touch with his son, Crown Prince Abdullah, whom the king named as heir to the throne before he left Amman on Tuesday.
