Sports and recreation clubs were warned yesterday that late, badly-prepared and incomplete applications for renewals of their licences were not acceptable.

The District Court president, Judge Peter Smithwick, told a lawyer representing the Ierne Sports and Social Club, Richmond Road, Dublin, that he would refuse to renew its licence next year if it submitted an application again with "absolutely no documentation".

He was speaking at the annual renewal session for about 250 sport and leisure clubs in the greater Dublin area.

While most of them were in order, Judge Smithwick said he was unhappy with a number which were incomplete. Some had no list of members, of rules or even of committee members.
