JUDGE Gerard Buchanan is expected to produce his report on the list of politicians who received payments from Dunnes Stores within days.

The Taoiseach's Department, at the request of the Fianna Fail leader, Mr Bertie Ahern, conveyed the Dail's view to Judge Buchanan yesterday that investigation into the payments controversy should be brought to a speedy conclusion.

It is understood that Judge Buchanan indicated that his report was very close to being finalised.

Meanwhile, the Dail's Select Committee on Finance and General Affairs will hold an 11 hour meeting until 10 p.m. tonight and meet again tomorrow to conclude the Committee State of the Compellability, Privileges and Immunities of Witnesses Bill.

The Fianna Fail Chief Whip, Mr Dermot Ahern, said last night that the Government had offered more time to the committee in order to finalise its deliberations this week.

"It is not more time that the committee requires," he added, "but a more enlightened, open and transparent attitude from this Government who promised much on this but who have failed miserably ever since."

He said the Government's attitude to date on this Bill had been to reject all substantial proposals for amendment. For all intents and purposes, for example, the Attorney General was excluded from accountability expect in respect of statistics and general administration.

It has become increasingly obvious since the Lowry affair that the powers to compel witnesses to attend Dail committees and to procure documents would be required to enable the sub committee of the Committee on Procedure and Privileges to conduct a thorough investigation into the Dunnes Stores controversy.
