Tomorrow night, in Vicar Street, one of the finest big bands ever to visit this country will give a concert. The UMO Jazz Orchestra (above) from Finland was described by no less than the late Dizzy Gillespie as "one of the best big bands I've ever played with". As one of the great big band leaders himself, he knew whereof he spoke. Its recordings, including a recent release on the Naxos budget label, confirm UMO as a dauntingly accomplished aggregation playing contemporary big band jazz with fire, precision and verve.
As such, it should prove a fitting climax to the Dublin Jazz Week. The concert begins at 8pm.
