An Israeli woman (24) was killed by Palestinian gunfire while driving in the Jordan valley early today, an Israeli military source said.

Israeli Prime Minister Mr Ariel Sharon yesterday vetoed a long-awaited meeting aimed at relaunching the peace process between his foreign minister, Mr Shimon Peres, and Palestinian leader Mr Yasser Arafat.

Mr Sharon said 48 hours of calm was needed before the talks could be held.

The United States urged both sides to declare a ceasefire last week as it tried to calm regional tension to pave the way for Arab participation in its campaign against world terrorism.
