Israeli soldiers shot and killed two Palestinian gunmen in a confrontation near a border fence in the Gaza Strip today, Palestinian medics said. In southern Israel, security forces shot dead a woman.
An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed troops had shot at several gunmen in northern Gaza, and hit two of them. Medics said in Gaza the Israeli military had so far prevented them from picking up the two bodies at the scene.
No militant group has claimed responsibility for the gunmen.
The Gaza border has seen sporadic Israeli-Palestinian violence despite a mid-January ceasefire achieved after a three-week Israeli offensive against the Hamas Islamist rulers of the coastal territory.
Elsewhere, Israeli security forces shot and killed an armed Arab woman today in a rare confrontation inside southern Israel, a security official said.
Police were trying to defuse a bomb strapped to her body, the security official said. Army radio reported there were no Israeli casualties in the incident.
It was not immediately clear whether the woman was an Israeli Arab citizen or a Palestinian from occupied territory.
