Israel's security cabinet was set tomeet this morning amid warnings of Palestinian reprisals over amilitary strike in the West Bank which left eight people dead,including two children.

Israeli radio reported that the inner cabinet, presided over byPrime Minister Mr Ariel Sharon, would work out its tactics to deal withgrowing anger following the attack on an office of the Islamic groupHamas.

Two Hamas leaders and four other activists were killed as wellas two brothers aged six and nine. They boys happened to be passingthe building with their mother who was also injured.

The Israeli government justified the attack, its deadlieststrike in the 10-month uprising, as a "preventative" strike to stopthe men preparing bomb attacks on Israeli targets.

The Israeli action was swiftly followed by a series ofPalestinian attacks in which five Jewish settlers were injured, oneseriously.
