An Israeli helicopter rocket attack has killed a member of the Palestinian movement Hamas in the West Bank town of Tul Karem, north of Nablus.

The slain activist, identified as 20-year-old Mr Amer Hudire, was killed when the helicopter fired two shells at his car, witnesses said.

Earlier a Palestinian armed with an automatic rifle and a pistol who opened fire on Israeli soldiers today in Tel Aviv, injuring 10 people. The gunman was severely wounded after Israeli security forces shot and captured him.

The man, who arrived in car in front of the defence ministry in Tel Aviv and opened fire on Israeli soldiers, was earlier reported by Israeli radio to have been shot dead by return gunfire.

But police sources later said security forces seriously wounded the attacker by shooting him as he was trying to escape in his car, which crashed into a pylon.
