The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has called for an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the Naughton rape case.
"We are extremely concerned that there was representation made in a case involving serious child abuse," Mr Paul Gilligan, ISPCC chief executive, told ireland.com.
He said the ISPCC was seeking assurances the whole system for protecting children is watertight. "This is not a political issue, it is an issue around the welfare of children," Mr Gilligan said.
