The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that a man who died in a fire at a holiday resort in Thailand was Irish.

The man was named locally as 29-year-old Jeffrey Gerard Scanlon. His body was found after a fire engulfed a row of beach huts on the island of Koh Chang, east of Bangkok.

A foreign affairs spokeswoman said the victim's family had been in contact, and had requested privacy.

The Department is providing assistance through the Irish consulate in Bangkok.

Thai police were quoted saying the blaze, which happened early on Saturday morning, may have been started by a dropped cigarette. Seven of the small holiday chalets were reported burnt, but other occupants escaped without injury.
