An Irishman has died in Spain after being attacked while on holiday last month.

An Irishman has died in Spain after being attacked while on holiday last month.

Mr Daniel O'Callaghan (24) from Rathmines, Dublin arrived in Gran Canaria on Saturday April 26th and was attacked early the next morning as he walked home after a night out.

He remained critically ill in a Spanish hospital with severe brain injuries after the assault. Spanish police have begun a murder investigation.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said they remained in contact with the family and were providing all necessary consular support.
