Witnesses sought to Fermoy crash in which woman (35) died

Gardai investigating whether heavy fog could have been a factor in two vehicle collision

Gardaí in Fermoy have appealed for witnesses to a collision in which a 35-year-old mother of two was killed early on Wednesday.

Pamela Ahern, from Dungourney Road in Castlelyons, was killed in the collision on the R628 between Castlelyons and Conna at 8.50am.

Ms Ahern was driving to work in her 4-wheel drive vehicle when it was in collision with another vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

The crash happened midway between O’Leary’s Cross and Aghern village.

Ms Ahern was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The driver of the other car, a man in his 30s, who is also from the local area and who was also on his way to work, was taken by ambulance to CUH with serious injuries.

The road was closed for several hours and diversions put in place to allow a Garda forensic crash investigator carry out an examination of the scene.

It’s understood driving conditions were poor at the time of the collision due to heavy fog in the area and gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to contact them.

Anyone who may have travelled the road before the crash or witnessed the collision is asked to contact Fermoy Garda station on 025 82 100.

Ms Ahern’s death is the third on Cork roads this year and the second in the space of five days following a fatal collision outside Bandon on Friday evening.
