Two people dead after crashes in Dublin and Cork

Two people have died following road crashes in Dublin and Cork.

A man (62) died after the car in which he was travelling left the M50 motorway between the Ballymount and Tallaght junctions before 1am on Saturday. It then collided with a lamp-post and protective barrier.

“The car then overturned before landing on its side,” a Garda spokesman said.

The man, a passenger in the vehicle, was fatally injured and removed from the scene to Tallaght Hospital where a post mortem is to be carried out.

The driver of the car, a woman (60), was also taken to Tallaght Hospital and is said to be in a critical condition having sustained serious injuries. No other injuries were reported.

A forensic examination has been carried out at the scene and the road has since reopened.

Separately, a man (30) has died after a crash involving two cars near Bandon in Co Cork on Friday evening.

The collision happened on the R586 at Coolfadda shortly before 6pm. The man, who was driving one of the cars, was fatally injured in the crash and was pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital.

The driver of the second car, a woman (37), was also taken to Cork University Hospital but her injuries were not life threatening.
