Gardaí appeal for witnesses after two fatal road traffic incidents

Two people have died in separate road traffic incidents in Co Longford and Co Kilkenny.

A fatal three-car collision occurred in Co Longford on Thursday night.

The crash occurred on the R198 at Cloonagh near Drumlish at approximately 7.20pm. A 34-year-old woman, the driver of one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to the mortuary at Tullamore Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Three other people involved in the crash were taken to Mullingar hospital; however their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Garda forensic collision investigators examined the crash site and the road has reopened to traffic.

Separately, a man in his 70s has died following a road collision in Co Kilkenny.

Gardaí said the crash occurred between Graiguenamanagh and New Ross at around 2.30pm on Friday afternoon.

The man was the driver and sole occupant of the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time after the crash.

Gardaí at Thomastown Garda station are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.

The road is currently closed to traffic and a forensic investigation is under way. Local diversions are currently in place.
