It is understood he got into difficulty while surfing in Lough Donnell, near Quilty in Co Clare, on Monday morning. The man, aged in his 20s, was a well-known lifeguard in the area.

The Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter R115 rescued the man from the water, at which point he was in a “serious condition”, sources said.
