Irish heatwave set to end with heavy showers predicted for this week

The heatwave Ireland has experienced for over a week is set to end this Monday.

Sunday will be the last very hot and dry day, according to Emer Flood, forecaster for Met Éireann.

She said it will be warm, dry and hot in most parts of the country on Sunday, but northern and western coats may experience lingering mist and fog.

“The heat will spark off very locally one or two heavy showers, possibly thunderstorms, but it won’t be like what we had a few days ago,” Ms Flood said.

The heaviest showers will be in Connacht, but the showers will dry out during the night.

Highest temperatures on Sunday will be 22-26 generally, but will reach up to 27 or 28 degrees in parts of the midlands.

On Monday, there will be quite heavy downpours of rain. “We have a change now with a front coming in from the west,” said Ms Flood.

This will result in cloudier and cooler weather, especially in the western half of the country.

Showery rain will spread across the western half of the country in the morning time and throughout the afternoon.

“It will still be quite warm in parts of the east, though not as hot as it was last week. Temperatures will be in the low 20s, reaching 23 or 24 degrees locally,” said Ms Flood.

This warmer weather in the east will meet the new western front tomorrow, resulting in some heavy showers and potential thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening time.

This will result in a high chance of spot flooding in Leinster and the south east.

Later on in the week, showers will be less heavy on Tuesday, but downpours will return on Wednesday. There will be sun in between the showers, and the rain is expected to ease as the week goes on.

Throughout the week overall, temperatures will return to the high teens and low twenties at most.

“The good news is that the nights will be feeling fresher. It will go down to 11 degrees in some areas tonight and stay like that for coming week,” said Ms Flood.
