Cartographer Tim Robinson honoured by NUI Galway

Connemara-based cartographer and writer Tim Robinson is to be honoured for his "unique contribution to Irish literature and landscape" with a series of events involving NUI Galway and the Royal Irish Academy (RIA).

The first in the series was held in the RIA in Dublin last night when an informal evening of conversation with Mr Robinson, chaired by arts broadcaster Vincent Woods, marked the publication of a new book, Connemara and Elsewhere.

A member of Aosdána and the Royal Irish Academy, Robinson has won international acclaim for his detailed hand-drawn maps of Connemara, the Burren and the Aran Islands as well as several books including the trilogy Connemara.

Also participating were photographer Nicolas Fève and writer John Elder, both of whom contributed to the book, edited by Prof Jane Conroy of NUIG.

An accompanying exhibition, ‘Interpreting Landscape: Tim Robinson and the West of Ireland/Rianú Talún: Tim Robinson agus Iarthar na hÉireann’, based on the Tim Robinson archive of some 100,000 items and featuring photographs and extracts from Connemara and elsewhere, will run at the university’s Hardiman Research Building from September 30th to January 31st, 2015.

A screening of 'Unfolding the landscape' an interview with Vincent Woods and Tim Robinson, commissioned by NUI Galway will also feature during the symposium at the University's Moore Institute.
