Ireland's exports to non-EU countries rose to €3,487m in May 2002 when compared with the relatively low April 2002 value of €2,554m, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office this morning.
Imports fell to €1,679m when compared with the April 2002 value of €1,724m.
The unadjusted exports were valued at €3,358m in May 2002,20 per cent higher than the €2,793m recorded in May 2001
Exports of chemicals and related products increased from €1,080m to €1,764m (up 63 per cent)in this period. Unadjusted imports were valued at €1,692m, three per cent lower than the €1,749m recorded in May 2001.
Comparing January-May 2002 with the corresponding period in 2001 shows:
- Exports increased from €14,289m to €14,596m (+2% per cent). Exports to the USA increased from €6,657m to €7,092m (+7 per cent)and exports to Switzerland increased from €996m to €1,330m (+34 per cent). Exports to the Philippines decreased from €486m to €154m (-68 per cent)and exports to Malaysia decreased from €490m to €339m (-31 per cent).
- Exports of medical and pharmaceutical products increased from €745m to €1,393m (+87 per cent)and exports of organic chemicals increased from €4,348m to €4,779m (+10 per cent).
Exports of electrical machinery decreased from €2,122m to €1,335m (-37%)and exports of Computers decreased from €2,603m to €2,440m (-6 per cent).
- Imports decreased from €9,552m to €8554m (-10 per cent). Imports from Switzerland increased from €176m to €312m (+77 per cent).
Imports from Singapore decreased from €647m to €411m (-37 per cent),imports from the USA decreased from €4,089m to €3,920m (-4 per cent)and imports from Japan decreased from €837m to €682m (-19 per cent).
- Imports of organic chemicals increased from €396m to €768m (+94%)and imports of transport equipment other than road vehicles, which includes aviation,increased from €498m to €825m (+66 per cent).
Imports of computers decreased from 2,431m to 1,916m (-21 per cent), imports of electrical machinery decreased from €1,595m to €1,139m (-29 per cent)and imports of telecommunications equipment decreased from €790m to €425m (-46 per cent).
