Iraq's central bank said today it had granted the National Bank of Kuwait, Britain's Standard Chartered, and HSBC licences to operate in the country.

"They can start operation as of the middle of March. There will be another three foreign licences announced shortly," an aide to cental bank governor Sinan al-Shabibi said.

The move heralds the entry of foreign banks into Iraq for the first time in decades.
