Investigation into man’s death in RUC custody

An investigation was launched in Northern Ireland today after a man died in police custody in Co Fermanagh.

An investigation was launched in Northern Ireland today after a man died in police custody in Co Fermanagh.

The 55-year-old, understood to be an Englishman, died while in a cell at Enniskillen RUC station during the night.

The RUC said the man was arrested at lunchtime yesterday on a Crown Court warrant and had been due to appear in court today.

The Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman was notified and sent a team headed by its director of investigations, Mr David Wood, to Enniskillen to begin an investigation.

The name of the dead man, who had been living in Co Fermanagh, has not yet been released by police. A post-mortem will be carried out.
