The health boards hold about £500,000 in funds belonging to patients who died intestate and for whom no next-of-kin could be traced, the report states. A further £2.6 million belonging to discharged or deceased patients is also held by the eight health boards.

Dormant accounts may also lie in banks and other financial institutions but these have no obligation to disclose the balances.
