A garda has denied stealing €700 which was handed in at Sligo Garda station after being found in the local cemetery. Garda James Lavelle, who is in his 20s, of Old Quay Court, Sligo, has pleaded not guilty to the theft of €700 at Sligo Garda station on August 26th, 2004.

Sligo Circuit Court heard yesterday that a local woman had hidden €700 inside an umbrella which she kept in her bedroom. She lost the money after using the umbrella while visiting a friend's grave at Sligo cemetery.

Liam Henderson, who lives at Cairns Drive opposite the cemetery, told Judge Anthony Kennedy and a jury that he found €700 in a bundle of cash while walking his dog in the cemetery in August 2004.

He handed the money in at Sligo Garda station. The garda on duty, Garda Lavelle, put the money in an envelope and took Mr Henderson's details, saying he would keep him informed if anyone claimed it.

The trial continues today.

€1.5m settlement in baby case

The High Court has approved a €1.575 million settlement in favour of a six- year-old boy who was born prematurely and suffers from severe cerebral palsy.

Gary Boland, through his mother, Ursula, Berwick Drive, Swords, Co Dublin, had sued Dr Anne Devitt, of the Plaza Clinic Practice, Main Street, Swords, arising from Dr Devitt's care of Mrs Boland in the days before Gary's birth at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, Dublin, on March 18th, 2000.

Dr Devitt had denied negligence and yesterday's settlement was made without admission of liability.

Water polo player awarded €20,000

An international water polo player, who was injured in a fall in a gym sauna, has been awarded just under €20,000 damages in the Circuit Civil Court.

Gerard Wilkes, who claimed his weight ballooned to almost 18 stone because of inactivity and lack of training following the October 2000 accident, said he had been dropped from the Irish water polo team a year after the accident, which occurred at the Total Fitness Gym, Malahide Road, Dublin.

Warrant for arrest of boy's mother

A bench warrant was yesterday issued for the arrest of the mother of a 15- year-old boy who is charged with theft, after she failed to turn up for his court case.

The north inner city Dublin boy was brought before the Children's Court charged with theft of a bicycle on Monday night.
