London - There were calls last night for an inquiry into leaks from the Hammond Inquiry into the events leading to the resignation of Mr Peter Mandelson.

Following newspaper reports suggesting that the inquiry had cleared Mr Mandelson, the BBC yesterday reported that the former Northern Ireland Secretary had been found to have acted honestly.

BBC Political Editor Andrew Marr quoted inquiry head Sir Anthony Hammond as saying in the report: "I have no reason to doubt Mr Mandelson's honesty throughout this period."

Mr Mandelson resigned from the Cabinet in January after apparent inconsistencies emerged in his account of a phone call made to the Home Office regarding the passport application of Indian tycoon and £1 million Dome donor Srichand Hinduja.
