An internal Garda inquiry has begun into the death of a man in Waterford Garda Station.

An internal Garda inquiry has begun into the death of a man in Waterford Garda Station.

The 59-year-old was arrested yesterday under the Public Order Act in Waterford city but later fell ill while in custody.

An ambulance was called and he was taken to Waterford General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

"The scene has been preserved and will be examined by the Garda Technical Bureau," a Garda spokesman said.

"The State Pathologist Dr Maire Cassidy will carry out a post-mortem later today.

"A Garda Superintendent from outside the Garda Division has been appointed to investigate all circumstances surrounding the death of the man."
