PARIS - A French magistrate placed a former minister and a former gendarme under judicial investigation yesterday over illegal phone-tapping by the anti- terrorist unit of the late president, Mr Francois Mitterrand, justice sources said.

Mr Michel Delebarre, who was chief aide to then prime minister, Mr Pierre Mauroy, at the time of the scandal in the mid-1980s, and former captain Paul Barril, who belonged to the unit, were formally placed under investigation.
