Gardaí in Galway are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 19-year-old man whose body was found in the docks earlier this week.

Preliminary results from a postmortem on Ronan Halloran of Shrule, on the Galway-Mayo border, indicate that he died of drowning. The postmortem was carried out at University College Hospital Galway (UCHG) on Tuesday afternoon by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.

Mr Halloran was last seen in the early hours of Sunday, after he had gone out with a friend on Saturday night in Galway city centre.

The two men got separated and witnesses interviewed by gardaí have said Mr Halloran was involved in a minor incident in Eyre Square. He was last seen making his way from Supermacs fast food restaurant at the top of the square, and was reported missing on Sunday afternoon when he failed to return home.

Mr Halloran's body was recovered from the Galway docks area at lunchtime on Monday and was taken to UCHG. Gardaí said yesterday that an investigation started into all aspects of Mr Halloran's disappearance.

Anyone with information which may help the inquiry is asked to contact Mill Street Garda station, Galway, at 091-538000. Gardaí are also endeavouring to identify the body of a man found in Connemara late last week.

The remains of the unidentified man were discovered on Friday afternoon at a wooded area close to the shores of Lough Inagh by members of a hunting party. Supt Noel Kelly of Clifden Garda station said a post-mortem carried out at the weekend ruled out foul play.
